Launching a Rigorous CBE Program May Be Closer Than You Think: Partnership in Program Design

November 13, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EST

CBExchange Breakout Session, Presented by C-BEN

Resulting from a successful partnership between the University of Phoenix and LearningMate, this is a story about executing a CBE redesign of an 11-course Carnegie program in 10 weeks. We focus on purpose — on how commitment to students required the redesign, and process — how we created workflows and procedures that assured quality while meeting market-driven deadlines. We’ll share documents, guidelines, and lessons learned that others can apply to their own programs.

What we will cover:

Attendees will leave with the following outcomes:

  1. A practical model and rationale for why CBE based on credit/clock hours can be achieved and is worth pursuing.
  2. A breakdown and analysis of the component parts of that model and how to prepare for each.
  3. A matrix for decision making on how to implement large scale CBE redesign across multiple degree programs.
  4. Clear examples of how Carnegie expectations for faculty-time with students can be sustained in a CBE model based on credit/clock hours.
  5. Illustrations of the role that learning science and Backwards Design played in emphasizing and enhancing student self-directed learning and habits of mind that improve student performance of mastery on summative performance assessments.
  6. Examples of platform tools that prepare these programs for current and future revisions: outcomes and standards management; metadata creation and tagging; a robust LOR and course building platform; data collection, storage and analysis; and LMS agnostic course delivery.
